Jimmy Kilgoreâs trailer was nestled among a patch of young poplars on a small hill overlooking an immense spruce swamp with a floating bog. From the back side of the trailer the bog could not be traversed except for the coldest of winter months, and then only by snowmobile or snowshoes.
The trailer itself was an older model with rust on all the visible metal. The front screen door was bent and cocked open halfway. Kilgoreâs black Chevy 4x4 truck sat out in front.
Johnny Lamar leaned over the hood of his county blazer up on the dirt road near Kilgoreâs driveway entrance, scanning the entire scene with binoculars. There was only one way in and out, and the sheriff knew it. Kilgore could try to escape through the woods to the south, but that was not likely. Johnny had sent five deputies around that way, and they were now in position along a cordon back in the woods. To the north of the trailer, there was only a small strip of tag alder along the edge of the huge swamp. Two more deputies had just reached that bottleneck.
Johnny had blocked off the driveway with vehicles. He and Deputy Alan Moran waited a few minutes for the others to get ready.
âThatâs the truck Trent Strong told you about,â the sheriff said to his young deputy. âLetâs hope Kilgore doesnât decide to shoot it out.â
The deputy looked concerned.
âLetâs go, Alan,â Johnny said, setting the binoculars inside the blazer. The sheriff pulled his 9mm Sig Sauer from its case, chambered a round, and set it back inside, leaving the flap open.
The deputy pumped a round into his sawed off .12 gauge, and clicked on the safety.
The sheriff called out to his deputies on the radio, started the blazer, and headed down the long dirt driveway. As they bounced along toward the trailer, the sheriff checked his pocket for the warrant. It was there.
They pulled up behind Kilgoreâs tall truck, blocking it in. Deputy Moran propped his door open, slipped out, and hurried to the side of the trailer nearest the door, crouched against the side, his shotgun aimed at the door.
Johnny went directly to the side of the front door, his .9mm out. He kicked the screen door open completely as he knocked on the door. âThis is the sheriff, Mr. Kilgore.â Nothing.
By now the other deputies had closed in on the trailer and positioned themselves for shooting. Three had gone around back to ensure he would not escape through a window.
Johnny knocked again. âThis is Sheriff Johnny Lamar. I have a warrant for your arrest.â Still nothing. He motioned for Deputy Moran to join him. When they were together on the steps, Johnny kicked the door in and the two of them flew into the house. Three other deputies followed closely behind.
With a quick sweep, they determined Kilgore was not there.
âCheck the place for weapons. Confiscate anything, and search for anything else that might look important. Bag his bank statements, phone bills, etc... Then Alan and Sam head over to Mammoth and find out who he hangs out with.
